District of Columbia Capitol Hill Foster Youth Internship Program participants put together a policy proposal related to child welfare services. Over the years this report has provided several highly regarded ideas because of the interns who are youth who have experienced living in the foster care system.
Kansas Secretary of the Department for Children and Families Phyllis Gilmore is being criticized for mismanaging the state's privatized foster care system. Allegations against her include a number of children's deaths, and openly discriminating against same-sex couples in the placement of children in foster care. A task force has also revealed that more than 79 children in foster care are missing. Former representative Mark Hutton of Wichita is "calling for leadership change."
South Carolina nonprofit, Carolina Youth Development Center is partnering with Cummins, Inc. to develop an independent living transitional home for youth aging out of foster care. With a $120,000 grant they were awarded, the partnership aims to reduce the negative outcomes for youth aging out of foster care.
