Florida closed out Nation Adoption Month by recognizing many of the businesses within the state that provide significant time off from work for parents who have newly adopted a child. While there is never enough time to spend with a newly adopted child, some businesses in Florida recently changed adoption leave from 12 to 16 weeks.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently vetoed legislation that would have provided a tax deduction for parents who adopt children with special needs. New York has over 23,000 children in foster care with many of them having special needs. This piece of legislation would have provided a taxpayer deduction of $10,000 annually for those who adopt children with special needs.

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick recently announced that there would be a statewide initiative for faith-based organization to recruit foster and adoptive families for children in foster care. Unfortunately, many are concerned that this effort will impact permanency for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in the foster care system.
